In today's article, we have described how to create an editable Word document from a JPEG image on your Windows or Mac computer.  While there is no way to convert a JPEG image directly into a word document that you can edit, you can use the free Optical Character Recognition (OCR) service to convert JPEG to a Word document file.  You can use, or convert JPEG file to PDF and then convert PDF to editable Word document using Word. Keep in mind that to get the best results, your JPEG file should be a high-quality text-based picture.

1. Open Online OCR

Go to https://www.onlineocr.net/ in your computer's web browser. In this website, you can convert various types of files (including JPEGs) into Word documents.

2. Click on Select File

It is at the bottom left of the web-page.  Doing this opens the File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) window in which you can choose your JPEG file.

3. Select your JPEG file

Go to the old folder where your JPEG is stored, then click on the JPEG file you want to convert.

4. Click on Open

It is at the bottom right corner of the window. By doing this the JPEG file is uploaded to the OnlineOCR website.
In Mac, you can click Choose here.

5. Select language

If you want to choose a language other than those given in the middle text box, then click on the current language and then click on the language you want to choose.

6. Make sure you are changing in the Word document itself

If the third box does not have "Microsoft Word (docx)" written in it, then click on the text box and then click Microsoft Word (docx) in the drop down menu.

7. Click CONVERT

It is on the very right side of the page.  By doing this, OnlineOCR gets the prompt to start converting your JPEG file into a Word document.

8. Click on Download Output File

This link is under the Select file button.  Your converted word document will be downloaded to your computer.
Depending on the settings of your browser, you have to choose the location to save or confirm the download before the file is downloaded.

9. Open your new word document

To do this, double click on the converted word document.

10. Click Enable Editing

It is in a yellow bar above the Word document.  By doing this the Word document will become editable.
This is necessary because you have downloaded the Word document from the Internet, and there is a possibility of danger in it.
Remember to save the changes you have made by pressing Ctrl + S (Windows) or Command + S (Mac).

  1. Good info - thanks for sharing. On ocr tools, you may also look at Grooper for reading PDF documents. I am using it to capture both data from both electronic or scanned files: https://www.bisok.com/grooper-data-capture-method-features/multi-pass-ocr/
